East Akron Labor Day Parade Recap
Message from EANDC CEO, Cheryl Stephens: Community of Opportunities
The board and staff of EANDC are deeply grateful to Parade Chair Judi Hill and Grand Marshal Clerk Tavia Galonski. Their leadership and commitment were essential to the success of the 50th Annual East Akron Labor Day Parade.
We also thank the thousands of people who came out to celebrate this long-standing tradition, of believing in community, peaceful interaction, and honoring the labor of generations of citizens in East Akron.
Yesterday, we were informed by the Mayor of Akron and public safety officials of credible threats to the parade. Threats are not new to communities like ours, and they do not deter us from working to make our neighborhoods stronger and safer.
In response, EANDC’s Board (Dan Roberson, Dan DeVille, Robert DeJournette), the NAACP (Judi Hill), Reverend Dr. Myrick (Arlington Church of God), Council President Margo Sommerville, Councilmember Johnnie Hannah, State Representative Veronica Sims, Judge David Hamilton, and Clerk Tavia Galonski worked with the Mayor and public safety leadership to create a condensed, secure parade route. With the support of Akron’s Fire and Police Departments, the parade went forward safely and successfully.
Thank you to every partner who stood with us to keep this tradition alive. The East Akron Labor Day Parade remains a symbol of collaboration and resilience, and a reminder that working together we can ensure Akron is truly a Community of Opportunities to build a better, stronger, and safer future.
